In recent times, major IT companies like Infosys, TCS, Accenture, and Wipro are hiring fewer freshers than before. Even mass recruiters are delaying joining dates or freezing offers.
This has left thousands of students and fresh graduates confused and jobless — but understanding the reason behind this shift can help you take the right action.
Recession fears in the US and Europe have reduced outsourcing and project budgets. Indian IT companies are getting fewer international projects, which directly affects fresher onboarding.
Many companies already have a large number of experienced employees sitting idle (on bench). So, instead of hiring new people, they are reusing old resources.
Tasks that freshers were expected to do earlier (testing, documentation, code review) are now done by AI tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, and automated systems.
Companies want people who are ready from Day 1. They’re hiring laterals (1–3 years exp) who don’t need training — unlike freshers who need onboarding and supervision.
Hiring through campus drives has slowed down drastically. Many colleges aren’t seeing big recruiters visit like before, especially non-tier 1 colleges.
Focus on hands-on skills that are project-oriented, such as:
Full Stack Development (MERN)
Data Analytics (Excel, SQL, Python)
Cloud (AWS/GCP basics)
DevOps or Cybersecurity
Take up internships (paid/unpaid) to gain real-world experience.
Companies prefer a fresher with 3 months of internship over one with just certificates.
Smaller companies and startups are still hiring. They offer real exposure, fast learning, and sometimes convert interns to full-time roles.

Free or low-cost certifications from platforms like Coursera, edX, LinkedIn Learning can add value — but only if they match your job goal.
While big companies are cutting back, it doesn’t mean all doors are closed. You can still succeed as a fresher by being adaptive, skilled, and visible online.
The job market is shifting — not ending.
